Of course, not all of the items on the list will necessarily apply to your goal or your personal life. To achieve a goal, you must own it. It should be custom made for you.

The tips below won’t work for everyone. We all have different personalities, motivations and ambitions. So choose tips that are right for you. Try putting a few into practice, and see what happens.

21 TIPS FOR SETTING GOALS AND ACHIEVING THEM

  1. Say “I will do this”. Start your goals with active, confident statements, and avoid half-word statements.
  2. Write it down. People who write down their goals on paper are 42% more likely to achieve them than those who don’t.
  3. Set a deadline. Ideally, choose a due date within three months . If you have a big goal that spans a long time, be sure to set several milestones in between to keep working towards your overall goal.
  4. Have realistic expectations. Many of us abandon our goal because it is too ambitious. Don’t have too high expectations and be patient. It takes time for your mind and body to adjust to new habits. Go slowly, but surely.
  5. Focus on fun. Don’t do something because you feel you have to, or because you were told you had to. This type of lens never lasts long. Have fun achieving your goal. In life, we do what we love, so make your goal something enjoyable: go for a run with a friend, listen to music or a podcast, or play the sport you loved when you were young.
  6. Measure your progress. People who track their progress  are more likely to reach their goal than those who don’t. Whether it’s steps, yoga classes, or weight lifting, set a metric and track your progress.
  7. Talk about your goal. Tell your friends, family and @ParticipACTION on Twitter or Instagram. If you make your goal known, you’ll be more likely to get support along the way.
  8. Post your goal somewhere visible. Write it down on a piece of paper and post it on the fridge, by the bed or at your workstation in the office. Seeing your goal often will really make it a priority.
  9. Be realistic. At first, it’s easy to get carried away and get your hopes up. Don’t set a goal that you hope to achieve, but a goal that you will actually achieve.
  10. Find the meaning behind your goal. The key to staying motivated is to have a clear reason in mind. Why do you want to achieve this goal? To have more energy? To develop your confidence? For your family? For pleasure? Figure out the underlying reason and use it as motivation when you’re going through a tougher time.11. Create a schedule. Every week, you look at your calendar to see the things you need to do, the deadlines you need to meet, and the meetings you need to attend, and you’re proactive. So should your physical activity goal. Create a schedule, fit it into your calendar, set deadlines and stick to them.
  11. Start with a very small goal. Having a small goal at the start is good advice, but many of us don’t take it into account. So start with a very small goal. A tiny goal. Something that would be impossible NOT to do. A single “push-up”. A few steps outside. A yoga position. Or just show up to the gym without working out. Start with a ridiculously small goal, be consistent, and gradually increase it.
  12. Transform the person you are. The sentences we repeat to ourselves often prevent us from moving forward. We often say to ourselves: I am lazy. I am not strong enough. I have no will or discipline. IT’S WRONG! They are just sentences. You can choose different ones. You can grow, adapt and evolve. You can become the person you always wanted to be. So incorporate this way of thinking into your goal. Don’t just exercise every week; become a person who exercises every week. Transform the person you are, not just your habits.
  13. Focus on what you can control. There are many things in life that are beyond our control. However, if you focus too much on these aspects, you will feel helpless. Focusing on what you control will allow you to shift your focus and think about what you can do instead of what you can’t.
  14. Be ready to face obstacles. When we put on rose-colored glasses to set our goals, we forget to prepare for the possible difficulties we will encounter. Your journey will be strewn with obstacles. Your progress won’t be linear, but that’s okay. Think about how you will recover. Prepare to overcome the inevitable obstacles you will encounter. Be prepared to actually achieve your goals and don’t limit yourself to theory.
